Dr Ali Eqbal is a consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist, with subspecialty interests in advanced colonic polyp diagnosis and resection as well as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Dr Eqbal has recently returned from a two-year fellowship in advanced endoscopy at the world-renowned Kings College Hospital in London, the United Kingdom. This fellowship involved meticulous training in the diagnosis of complex colorectal polyps utilizing magnification chromoendoscopy, as well as advanced endoscopic resection techniques including endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) and endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR). He was mentored by expert colorectal surgeons and interventional endoscopists Mr Amyn Haji and Mr Andrew Emmanuel. Through clinical research and dedicated practice, Dr Eqbal strives for excellence in the optical diagnosis and management of colonic polyps.
Prior to this Dr Eqbal also completed a clinical research fellowship in 2022 in complex IBD at the Austin Hospital in Melbourne under the tutelage of Professor Peter De Cruz. His special interests include dysplasia surveillance and resection as well as the management of acute severe ulcerative colitis.
Dr Eqbal has multiple publications in both national and international journals in the fields of endoscopy and IBD. His research focus and publications include quality in endoscopic resection, the use of magnification chromoendoscopy, therapeutic drug monitoring in IBD and the novel use of biologic therapy. He has presented his research at both national and international conferences including the Australian Gastroenterology Week, the British Society of Gastroenterology, the United European Gastroenterology Week and Digestive Diseases Week in the United States.
Dr Eqbal’s further interests include the education and mentorship of junior doctors, having completed multiple endoscopy trainer courses and supervised colonoscopy resection workshops. Dr Eqbal regularly trains gastroenterology and colorectal registrars, sharing knowledge and fostering the next generation of endoscopy experts. He is passionate about public health and education, and is happy to be contacted directly to discuss any clinical queries or referrals required by his General Practitioner colleagues.
